Jeremy Hunt announced today that the ambition of the coalition regarding superfast broadband is for 90% of the UK to benefit of a broadband speed of at least 25Mbps by 2015.
Before this, the government said they were willing UK to have “the best superfast broadband network in Europe” in most of the country, but now they expanded their goal to the vast majority of the country.
“We have set aside the money and the expertise to make this happen. Now local authorities need to step up to the plate by bringing forward their own plans setting out how they will deliver this level of ambition,” Hunt said.
The 10 per cent of the homes that were left outside the project should also be guaranteed with at least 2Mbps by 2015. The reason they were left outside seems to be the fact that the area where they are located is less accessible and making the infrastructure for superfast broadband for them would be too expensive at this time.
The DCMS spokesman said if the 90 per cent target is not achieved by 2015, the government has earmarked an additional £300m for the first two years of the next parliament to achieve its aim.
