Leyton County Cricket Ground under threat! - Updated7.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Sat 12th Jan 2008
Shocked residents have contacted Leyton and Wanstead Liberal Democrats having heard that part of Leyton Cricket Ground could be built on. The favoured proposal coming from the Council's consultation on 'Building Schools for the Future' is to build a new, large school combining a primary, secondary, and sixth form on the County Ground to replace the current George Mitchell Secondary and Beaumont Primary Schools. In addition to the school a new large Health Centre is planned to be built on the site.
Norlington Boys School will also be relocated to the old George Mitchell site. The old buildings will be demolished and new ones built. Some of the facilities of the new schools on the County Ground and George Mitchell site will be shared. These proposals will create a new school campus of approximately 1700 students in a highly residential area. It is expected that the sites vacated by Norlington Boys and Beaumont Primary Schools will be redeveloped for housing. Target completion date for the new school on the County ground is 2011, whilst the rebuilt Norlington is due to open in September 2012. Leyton and Wanstead Liberal Democrats say: Residents are rightly concerned about losing yet more open green land to development. So much of our open spaces have been lost - Leyton Grange and the Beaumont have been built on and recently our marshes have been fenced off for allotments. Traffic is expected to increase. What do you think about the proposals? Fill in our survey (click on the button in the menu bar at the top right of this page) or email us your comments.
